What was the mainland of The Aztecs? What is that area now called? The main land was Tenochititlan, it was a major city and is now known in the area of Northern Mexico.
When did the Aztec empire start? How did it end? It started in the 14th century and finished by 1519, when Hernan Cortes invaded and conquered by the Spanish conquest.
How do we know so much about The Aztecs? We know so much because the made large illustration and written books called The Codices and this recount their rituals and items as well as what they did
Who was the ruler of Tenochititlan? Moctezuma the Second
Which three cities had alliance with Tenochititlan? Tenochtitlan, Texcoco, and Tlacopan
Where was Tenochititlan built? It was built in what is now known as the Valley of Mexico
What is the geography of Tenochititlan? It is in the middle of an extremely wide lake and it is surrounded by mountains that makes trade extremely hard and cumbersome
How did people figure out where to build Tenochititlan? There is a legend that says that an eagle perched on a cactus, with a snake in its mouth, pointed out the spot to the Aztecs.
Population and density of the city? Tenochititlan has around 200, 000 people, and around 60,000 people that come to the market place in the centre of the city, every day!!
What is the organisation of the city? It is very clean and orderly, separated into four quarters. It has the grand and expensive buildings around the centre of the city, such as the temples and sacred areas. The market centre in the middle and then as u go further out it turns into the commoner's small simple housing.
How did they connect land together? They used bridged and canals to go across the large water bodies
How did they get their material? Since, Tenochititlan was built on a marshy area they couldn't farm any food or cotton. Therefore, Montezuma the Second introduced the tribute system, where neighbouring suburbs had to provide supplies as tax.
What are some necessary items that Tenochititlan received as tax? They received 7000 tonnes of corn, 4000 tonnes of beans, 4000 tonnes of amaranth (used for religious purposes) and 200 thousand cotton cloaks.
What were some luxury items they received as tax? They received things such as chocolate, feathers, precious stones, tobacco and many others
What did Montezuma also accept (as tax), as they showed his power ? Things like scorpions, or spiders to show that he owned everything down to the insects in the Aztec civilisation
What was the punishment for not paying tax? The punishment was that u would either die, or have to pay double next yr.
What was the emperors role and rights in the feudal system of the Aztecs? They had absolute power over everything and chosen by a council of rulers. They were regarded as a god or 'the great speaker'.
What was the nobles role and rights in the feudal system of the Aztecs The nobles were people like high priests, heads of government, judges, land owners and military leaders. Nobles were mostly hereditary and was the only class that could wear decorated cloaks and jewellery.
What was the warriors role and rights in the feudal system of the Aztecs? They were highly respected mostly young men and they left their home at the age of puberty to go into the war house, where they trained. It was mostly a part time job and they hierarchy in the warrior class depended on how many live captives u had.
What was the commoners role and rights in the feudal system of the Aztecs The commoners were low level priests, farmers, crafts people and merchants. They were expected to pay the noble tributes and they usually ate corn and had a simple home. They weren't allowed to wear a cloak longer than their knees and had to take off their sandals when addressing a higher class.
What was the slaves role and rights in the feudal system of the Aztecs They had very few rights and were owned by nobles. They lived on the owners property and could buy their freedom. Reasons u were a slave included; u were a criminal, u couldn't pay your debt, captured in war. They couldn't marry without permission.
