Diatonic Only using the seven tones of a standard scale without any chromatic alterations
Pentatonic A scale consisting of five notes (most commonly 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th notes of the major diatonic scale)
Semitonal an interval equal to a half tone in the standard diatonic scale
Blues Scale A different scale compared to the major scale, mainly used in jazz, blues songs The third, fifth and the seventh notes are flattened. You only use the 1st ,3rd ,4th ,5th ,7th notes of the scale.
Triadic Playing in triads (groups of three)
Augmented Increasing the note values of the notes previously played
Diminution Decreasing the note values of the notes previously played
Decorated (ornaments) Notes which are added to the main notes of a piece of music in order to make it interesting (can also be described as embellishment)
Trill The rapid alternation of two tones either a whole or a half tone apart
Mordents A note played with a single rapid alternation of two tones
Turn consists of four or five notes, the principal notes a degree above and below it (it turns around the principal note)
Appoggiatura When a note is leaned on before playing the principal note, consists in suspending or delaying a note, taking part of its value
Acciaccatura Played as quickly as possible before the note that followers it
Nachschlag The opposite of appoggiatura and consists of a short grace note played AFTER the principal note
Shake/Trill A rapid alternation
Anacrusis is the note or sequence of notes which precedes the first downbeat in a bar
Intervals The distance between two pitches
Ascending Scale When a scale is rising in pitch
Passing notes a non harmonic note played that leads from one harmonic note to the next
Notes of anticipation introduction on the weak beat of one note of a new chord before the previous chord is resolved
