Question Answer
What happens in ionic bonding? Atoms transfer (gain or lose) electrons to form positively or negatively charged atoms.
Which groups are most likely to from ions? Groups 1&7 and 2&6
What Group1 and 2 elements? metals... they loose electrons and for +ve ions - CATIONS
What are group 6 and 7 elements? Non-metals.... They gain electrons to form -ve ions. ANIONS
What diagram to you use to show what happens to the electrons in ionic bonds? 'Dot and Cross' diagrams
What structure does ionic compounds? A Regular Lattice (not lettice)
What are ionic compounds characteristics? Have high melting points and boiling points... They conduct electricity when aqueous or molten.
What are the rules with naming compounds? (THERE ARE TWO) 1. When two different elements combine the compound's name is 'something -IDE'. 2. When three or more different elements combine and one of them is oxygen, the compound's name is often 'something -ATE'
Give an example of a compound name ending in 'IDE' Sodium + chlorine --> Sodium chloride... (ANYTHING LIKE THAT)
Give an example of a compound name ending in 'ATE' Copper + sulphur + oxygen --> copper sulfATE
What do you use to work out the formula of an ionic compound? You.... look at what ions they form when they react... (OR JUST SING THE VALENCY SONG!!!!)
What are the rules of solubility? common salts of SODIUM, POTASSIUM and AMMONIUM = soluble NITRATES = SOLUBLE common CHLORIDES = soluble except (SILVER AND LEAD CHL...) common SULFATES = soluble except (LEAD, BARIUM AND CALCUIM SUL...) common CARBONATES and HYDROXIDES = insoluble except (SODIUM, POTASSIUM and AMMONIUM)
