| Intro | Hello students, teachers, and judges. My name is Alan Wahba and today I will be talking about how the Ebola breakout had a huge effect on the world. |
| Paragraph 1 | First I would like to talk about some history and facts. The virus is most commonly known as Ebola Virus Disease/EVD. The official name is Ebola hemorrhagic fever. The virus is transmitted through contact with the infected people and animals and is on average 50% fatal. In most cases it is usually 25-90 percent fatal. There are currently no guaranteed cures but there is an experimental vaccine. The disease causes an acute, serious illness which is usually fatal. The virus began in a village in Zaire. The patient was buried next to the Ebola river and that is where it got it's name from. |
| Paragraph 2 | This one patient led to a big outbreak. The funeral home workers prepared the body but then died due to the disease. The people attending the funeral caught Ebola and died. This process kept repeating itself multiple times. It then slowed down in the 1980s but became a problem again in 1995. |
| Paragraph 3 | In March of 2014, a 3rd outbreak occurred. From March to August it killed 20000+ people. From August to December another 25000+ people died. This outbreak was bigger than the first 2 combined. North and South America were safe until October 25th 2014. A man in Dallas had returned from a trip to west Africa carrying the Ebola disease to the USA. This man died and 3 more were infected. In November, a Spanish nurse in Brazil was infected but managed to survive the disease. |
| Paragraph 4 | Ebola kills people by taking over the dendritic cells. The dendritic cells then signal other immune system cells to self destruct. These taken over cells become Ebola virus producers. They create millions of Ebola cells everyday. Ebola finds it very easy to attack the liver causing internal bleeding. Liquid is constantly being released. Fevers are going around, massive blood loss leading to less oxygen being transferred, and constant mayhem. This is all happening at the same time. It is like many nuclear bombs exploding in every part at once. |
| Paragraph 5 | This tells the immune system to launch every attack it has in the most powerful way: a cytokine attack. This only eliminates 25%-45% of the disease. If you happen to ever reach this point, well the chances of you surviving are very slim. |
| Paragraph 6 | Ebola is changing the world because thousands of people in developing countries are dying constantly. This disease is deadly and if it spreads to other countries, massive problems are on our hands. People are going to start riots, the death toll will increase, and civilization will break-down. In west Africa, this is already happening. Their situation is much worse. We salute those who risked their lives to stop the outbreak. Our hearts go to the thousands of people who died from this disease. |
