What is compounding? Give examples Compounds are coinages formed by putting 2 or more words together. Technology has increased the number of compound words e.g. spreadsheet, fingerprint, secondhand
What is affixation? Give examples Taking a root word, and adding either a prefix or suffix. They can be bound or free. e.g. bound morpheme suffix = facer free morpheme suffix = facelift bound morpheme prefix = interface free morpheme prefix = fatface
What is an acronym? Give examples Used to denote lexemes made from initial letters of the constituent words, however, it is pronounced as a word e.g. Radar, NATO, scuba
What is initialism? Give examples Used to denote lexemes made from initial letters of the constituent words, but each letter is pronounced separately e.g. GCSE, HTML, BBC
What are the 4 forms of clipping? Give examples Back clipping (loses the end) = advert(isment) Fore-clipping (loses the beginning) = (tele)phone middle clipping = (in)flu(enza) Complex clipping (each part of a compound is clipped) sci(ence)-fi(ction)
What is a blend? Give examples Formed by taking parts of words and blending them into one e.g. smog, motel, brunch
What is an eponym? Give examples An eponym is a personal name or title that becomes a common noun. This often happens with brands e.g. Sellotape
