Question Answer
Three things which increase collisions? 1) HIGHER TEMPERATURE 2) HIGHER PRESSURE 3) LARGER SURFACE AREA
more collisions increases? Rate of reaction
Why does an increased temperature cause more collisions? As temperature is increased particles move quicker so they collide more often.
Why does an increased pressure increase collisions? A higher pressure causes particles to be more crowded together so they will collide more often.
What is the minimum amount of energy needed by particles to react known as? Activation energy
What is a catalyst? Is a substance that speeds up a reaction, with out being changed or used up in reaction.
Why does a larger surface area increase collisions? A larger surface area means particles are more exposed to other reactant therefore there are more collisions.
What is a solid catalyst? Gives reactant particles surface to stick to , increases successful collisions.
Advantage of catalysts? Work at lower temperature = less energy used in reaction = saves money
Disadvantage of catalysts? Can be poisoned by impurities (sulphur impurities poison iron catalysts in Haber process)
