Question Answer
What is the definition of 'Data' ? Raw facts and figures that have no Context to them
Give an example of 'Data': 1. Yes, Yes, No, Yes, No, Yes, No, Yes 2. 42, 63, 96, 74, 56, 86 3. 111192, 111234
What is the definition of 'Information' ? Data that has been processed by a computer system to give it context / meaning
Give an example of 'Information': 1.Responses to the market research question – “Would you buy brand x at price y?” 2.Jayne’s scores entered in the six AS/A2 ICT modules 3.The previous and current readings of a customer’s gas meter
What is the definition of 'Knowledge' ? Knowledge is information which has had rules applied to it in order to understand or interpret it
Give an example of 'Knowledge': Swimmer 1 63.6s, Swimmer 2 59.3s, Swimmer 3 59.7s and swimmer 2 is the fastest and consequently wins
What is 'En-Coding' ? It is the process of shorting data in a database and or spreadsheet into codes like M = Male or F = Female
What are the 'Advantages' of Encoding Data? 1.Speeds up data entry as the codes are short and the user may click to select the code from a list 2.Reduces the chance of errors in Data Entry as there is less to type in 3.Codes are shorter than original data, so saves disc storage
What are the 'Disadvantages' of Encoding Data? 1.Coarsens data by fitting it into small number of groups (categories) 2. Value judgments needed to fit data into a certain group (category), so selection of category by data entry staff may not be consistent.
What is meant 'En-Coding Value Judgments' These are judgments when in a question say what its about; E.g What do you think of these Flashcards? Poor,Average, Good?
'En-Coding Value Judgments' have many issues with them. These are: 1. They are subject to personal opinion; E.g a persons good could be another persons poor. 2.They can be very difficult to En-Code without some loss in detail.
