Social factors

· The ‘green exchange project’ poor families in squatter settlements can go to neighbourhood centres once a week and exchange their trash for bus tickets or food

· ‘Citizen Streets’ are in each district, and are large yellow tubes which contain information about identity cards, employment, housing issues, welfare and subsidized shops

· Average income is now 66% higher than Brazilian average

· Money from industry goes to fund hospitals, schools and daycare centres

Economic factors

· The average person only pays 10% of their income on public transport

· The public housing programme created 50,000 homes either built new or from refurbished derelict houses- it made sure that everyone got an affordable home which was safe

· There has been a concentration on non-polluting and high tech industry which has helped to achieve economic growth

Environmental factors

· Bus Rapid System saves 7 million gallons of fuel per year, as people are encouraged to use public transport

· ‘Green exchange project’ the people in squatter settlements can’t be accessed by trash trucks, so encouraging people to take their trash to neighbourhood centres reduced trash build up in rivers etc

· Curitiba recycles 2/3 of household waste- paper recycling saves 1200 trees per day
