Acidic R groups (( arginine, aspargine, aspartate, glutamine ) and ( aspargine, glutamate, lysine, glutamine )) have carboxylic side-chains which confer them a ( negative, positive ) charge at physiological pH (due to their ( protonation, deprotonation ) turning them into conjugate bases) and thus are very ( hydrophobic, hydrophilic ). This means that they are commonly found in the ( surface, core ) of proteins and in ( active, binding ) sites of enzymes (since they are used in catalysis as a ( acid, base )).
