SPECIAL OLYMPIC GAMES
COSTA RlCA 2008
About one thousand Costa Rican athletes were selected to compete for a spot in the first-ever Central American and Caribbean Special Olympic Games in Costa Rica in 2008. Narrowing down the list of people's names after 16 competitions around the country, national judges had observed the athletes at the National University's Sports
Center, El Palacio de los Deportes and the downtown streets of Heredia. Then, those judges chose the top 220 athletes who made up a national team that confronted the others during the different competitions.
Starting at 9:00 a.m., the national finals included weightlifting, running, five-a-side soccer, cycling, swimming, gymnastics and a triathlon. According to Costa Rica's Special Olympics communications and marketing director M6nica L6pez, the Costa Rican team went on to face competitors from throughout Central America and the Caribbean as well as Mexico and China from November 24 to November 30. The November games were the first in the region, adding to the broader Latin American tournament. The last game played in El Salvador, in 2006 of The Special Olympics, was dedicated to the country's former president, Oscar Arias who "gave special support to the national disabled athletes," said López.
