Self-assessed health status is a commonly used measure that provides a look into how people perceive their own health, while self assessed health status may appear to be subjective, this method has been found to be a good indicator/predictor of subsequent illness.

Explain what "Health determinants" are.

A health determinant is something that can influence health in a positive way (protective factor) or negative way (risk factor). Includes social and environmental factors and health behaviours.

Why is it important to identify the determinants of health for individuals and for the population? Use examples.

Identifying the determinants of health can allow overseeing bodies of government to judge the health of the population or specific individuals and determined the cause of the state of their health whether it be good or bad. For example in a population with a high incidence of lung cancer, it could be determined that a risk factor such as smoking could be attributed to the health status of these individuals.

Contrast life expectancy rates between the indigenous population and the non-indigenous population in Australia

For the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population in 2005-2007, their life expectancy was estimated to be 11.5 years lower than that of the non-indigenous populations (67.2 compared to 78.7).

Explain why health determinants can have a positive or negative effect

Health determinants have the ability to have a positive or negative effect as they are the factors that surround the person in their everyday life, they are inescapable and will always have an effect on the person's life.
