The Uprisings and Crisis 1956Hungarian UprisingSuez CrisisPolish Uprising June-October1956What HappenedWhat HappenedImpactImpactWhat HapennedImpactRiots break out in Poznan where local factoryworkers protested about increased worktargets. They were put down with heavycasualties but to overcome the bitterness thePolish Communist Paty turned to its formerleader Gomulka after he was released fromPrison. Soviets sent in a high-powereddelegation and ordered the Red army thatwas there to advance on the city but waswithdrawn on the assurances of Gomulkathat they would remain a Warsaw Pact state. It shows that the USSR wasnot all powerful as it couldnot take on Poland as well asHungary at the same timeand a new side to it as beforethey would have beencrushed there and then. The government was forced to replace its leader Matyas Rakosi with anew one Erno Gero. This was due to the destalinisation going on atthe time. Tito wanted this as he thought they may look to Belgradeand not Moscow.Egypt decided to take control of the Suez Canal andthis gave them an excuse to get rid of Nasser whohad been working with the USSR up until now andbeen getting their support. This canal, however, wasowned by GB and France which is what gave themthe excuse to do this. To do this they decided toinvade the area around the Suez Canal They did thiswith a force of 80000 using the 1954 Anglo-Egyptianagreement to justify it all. When Isreal attacked GBand France demanded the withdrawal of the Egyptiantroops even though they hadn't been the aggressors. They denied so GB bombed Egyptian airfields.Protestors wanted to appoint Imre Nagy and demanded thewithdrawal of Soviet troops. This all occurred on the 23rd ofOctober 1956in Budapest with Polish reformers againencouraged by Tito. The protestors attacked the Radio stationand so Gero appoints Nagy as PrimeMinister to avoid any further violence.USSR mobilises 30000 troops as well as artillery andtanks. Krushchev tries to reconcile with the Declaration onthe Principles of Development and a FurtherStrengthening Friendship and Co-Operation between theUSSR and other Socialist Countries'. This was an attemptto to provide mutually agree a framework that was alsolegal. However, this does not stop Nagy from threateningto leave the Eastern Bloc and become an independentstate. If this occurred then the other states would mostlikely follow.US PolicyThe Radio Free Europe station sponsored by the USAencouraged the Hungarians to revolt. They were toldNATO would intervene even if it wouldn't. HoweverEisenhower fearful of nuclear war states to the USSRthat they would not save Nagy and had no interest inusing the satellite states as military allies.Shows the USSR feels threatened and was beginningto show signs of weakness, however, the US was stillscared of what may happen if the Eastern Bloc wasattacked. Shows that the superpowers still relied onthe principle of MAD but that the USA was trying tobreak up the Eastern Bloc if it could. The Suez crisis causes a Soviet troop advance and after some fighting a USSRloyal government lead by Janos Kader was installed.US interventionThe US not only says in NATO that the attack iswrong but does not lend any money o the British. This was because the US thought that the Britishand French were trying to prop up their empires. Also, Eisenhower was going through an election atthe time. Through all of his pressure, Eisenhowerstopped fighting on November 6th just days beforethe British and French had control of the wholecanal. This was because the US did not want the USSR togain allies in the middle east and to avoid criticismfor not doing anything in Hungary. Also, this meantthat they were forced to choose between Anglo-frenchcolonialism and the Middle Easts' nationalism. Bychoosing the later they hoped to counter any gainsthe USSR would make in the situation.Double click this nodeto edit the textClick and drag this buttonto create a new node
