EQ
the levels of frequency response of an audio signal, or controls which allow their adjustment.

processing a signal in order to control or adjust the amplitude of particular frequencies in the spectrum

- compensating for the tonal deficiencies of a sound source
- removing unwanted or unnecessary frequencies from your sound source
- enabling blending of vastly contrasting or extremely similar sounding sources
- creating 'space' in the mix

masking - frequencies blend until you cant distinguish one from the other

types

selectable frequency EQ - a selectable frequency is used to choose a selection of frequencies to manipulate (atenuate or boost at that frewuency)

fixed band EQ - really only on DJ controls + guitar amps - allows you to manipulate a particular frequency in each band

graphic EQ - used for live sound application (roomodes)

parametric EQ - the most flexible

Filters

Filters refer to the way in which a device processes equalisation

low pass, high pass, band pass,

Peaking filter (bell curve at the desired frequency)

Attenuation and boost

A synthesiser is its filter

some filters are more expensive due to its particular sonic character

Resonance - if you cut frequencies off, rather than have it as a flat cutoff and can add a resonance notch, and increase the volume just before the cutoff you can trip people's ears

Passive EQ - processed via a series of inductors, capacitors and resistors

Active EQ - processed via powering the signal or more specifically 'altering the feedback loop of the op-amp'

cut - to diminish the amplitude relating to certain frequency

boost - to increase amplitude relating to a certain frequency

Q control - how broad or how narrow a range of frequencies is affected
