The Space RaceThe United StatesThe SovietUnionBefore the many achievements of the Soviet Union, thegovernment was mainly using the rocket program as ameans to create intercontinental ballistic missiles foruse against the United States. It wasnt until after manyyears of convincing were they allowed to launch asattelite into space. The USSR achieved many of theirgoals in going into space before the Americans couldeven get close. Sergey Korolev's expertise inmanagement enabled them to achieve space travelbefore their timeSergei KorolevSergei Korolev was the leadingmind behind the Soviet SpaceProgram. Unlike Von Braun hisidentity was kept a closelyguarded state secret to ensure thesuccess of there program.Wernher Von BraunVerner Von Braun was a Germanrocket scientist during WW2. He wasdeported from Germany at the endof the war and became the leadingscientist in the American SpaceProgram. The United States always laggedbehind the USSR in the race forspace. Their number of firsts wasalways lower and they could neverkeep up.The Soviet Union brought home the first win in thespace race. The launched the first satellite intospace: The Sputnik. The launch of this causedmassive political and social problems in America, the fact that a communist country could achievethis before democracy was a massive blow to thepolitical and social pride of the nation.A huge part of the Space Race wasAmerica's fear of the communistregime. As it was spreading throughinto China, America was becomingincreasingly worried about theircountries hope for the future. The Two Big IdeologiesThe USSRThe U.SThe Space race was one of thebiggest Communism vs.Capitalism encounters inhistory. It put the weak parts ofboth ideologies to the test andshowed the dark side of both.CapitalismCommunismEconomyEconomyLeadersLeadersThroughout the Space Race, America had 4Presidents. One of the most influential wasPresident Kennedy who challenged at congress theAmerican people to land a man on the moon withinthe decade. Although he didn't see his challengethrough his encouragement pushed America tomake the jump. From the moment JFK announced the common goal of landing anAmerican on the moon, he told the American people that wouldhave to make sacrifices to achieve this goal. The Already massfear of Nuclear war was not a mitigating help when congressannounced they would be increasing taxes to pay for the newideas. NASA's current budget would have to have been 500xbigger to afford everything that was being demanded. The upsideto the increased taxes was a huge increase in jobs that whereavailable for engineers and scientists. This would bringunemployment right down. Despite the huge tax increases andamount of congressional money being spent they gave JFK themoney because he had so skilfully captivated the minds ofAmericans.SocialSocialThe Social impact of the Space Race on the U.S.was vast. JFK managed to convince the Americanpeople that the impossible was possible. Heinspired a nation of scared people to cometogether and sacrifice for a common goal. Theworld turned its gaze to the stars. They wonderedof the incredible possibilities of sending man tospace. The possibility of meeting new life.PoliticalThe whole idea of launching rockets and sending a man tospace would have always been expensive. This meant thatcongress met on countless occasions. Many petitions wheresigned and sent into congress to stop the increase budget forNASA. This left a difficult decision for the U.S. government as towhether the American people wanted and were prepared to spendthe money on this goal. JFK and his associates had to draftmany bills to congress and if they had not passed them theUSSR most definitely would have won the space race.Nikita Khrushchev was a soviet politician that lead theCommunist party during part of the Cold War. InKhrushchev’s eyes because the Soviet Union hasout-produced the United States in weapons and spacetechnology, the Soviet Union has in essence defeatedthe United States. Furthermore, with capitalism no longera concern, the Soviet Union is free to pursue its goal ofcommunism. His main outlook was that beating theUnited States in science was in essence defeatingcapitalism once and for all.Much like the U.S. the idea of their opposing ideologiesgetting a one up on each other was unbearable. Every timethe U.S. government upped the budget of NASA the sovietsimmediately did the same to keep in line. The fear that wasbeing advertised against capitalism was also a hugespurring tool for the soviets to gain funding for the spaceprogram. The idea of the capitalist regime failing in this areaseemed to good to be true. The US space effort had more funding than theSoviet space program. NASA spent about $23billion dollars on manned programs from 1961through the first lunar landing in July 1969(Mercury: $.4 billion; Gemini: $1.3 billion; andApollo: $21.3 billion). Estimates for the Sovietmanned programs range from $4.8 billion to$10.1 billion or less than 50% of NASA's budget.Nikita KhrushchevJohn FKennedyDouble click this nodeto edit the textClick and drag this buttonto create a new node
