aaAct One

Part one:

Alfieri the lawyer, enters and sets the scene. He tells the audience that justice is very important to the people of red hook and that of Red Hook and that often justice is quite different to the law.

Enter Eddie Carbone. He annoys his niece when he criticises her clothes and her behaviour.

Beatrice, Eddie's wife, is worried because of the imminent arrival of her cousins who are illegal immigrants from Sicily.

Eddie encourages Beatrice to tell Catherine the story of Vinny Bolzano who snitched on his uncle who was an illegal immigrant.

The cousins, Marco and Rodolpho, arrive.

Eddie shows his dislike of Rodolpho.

Part two:

Alfieri talks to the audience about Eddie's troubled future.

Eddie shows how irritated he is by Rodolpho.

Beatrice argues that Eddie is unreasonable and tells him that he should not create any trouble.

She speaks to him about the problems they have in their relationship and also the fact she no longer feels like "a wife".

Rodolpho returns from a night out with Catherine. Eddie tells Catherine that Rodolpho is using her to help him become an American Citizen.

When Beatrice is alone with Catherine she points out that Catherine is now a grown woman and should behave appropriately in Eddie's company.

Eddie meets Alfieri and tries to enlist his help but the lawyer tells Eddie there is nothing he can do.

Part 3

Marco and Rodolpho relate some of their experiences in Italy.

Catherine flirts with Rodolpho to show her independence.

While showing Rodolpho how to box, Eddie hits him

Marco Reacts by lifting a chair with one hand to show his superior strength over Eddie.
