Chapter 4 – business management and planning

Routine tasks are those that are done regularly. These are some tasks that a business must do in a regular basis to survive. Each area of a business will have its own routine tasks; they vary according to the nature of the business. However some tasks will be done regularly regardless to the nature of the business. Many of these are for legal or safety reasons, such as checking electrical equipment regularly. Other tasks such as tax returns and payments. Generally these are scheduled into the company diary.

Non routine tasks cause problems in the business as there is a lack of resources available to carry them out. If a non-routine tasks needs external specialist assistance they recruit staff for it. This can be expensive and the staff might not have the resources to do the job correctly. Examples of such jobs are setting up new branches or finding a place for a new factory.

When trying to make a good decision, a person must consider the positives and negatives of each option, and consider all the alternatives. For effective decision making, a person must be able to forecast the outcome of each option as well, and based on all these items, determine which option is the best for that particular situation. Passing down authority to make a change in the business is called delegation. A decentralised business is where a group of people make the important decision of a business. Commonly the decision makers are the directors and CEO of a business.
