ANA - hyperthyroid

Nursing responsibilities:
provide in a cool quiet environment
Provide a stress free environment, be reassuring, teach procedures to reduce cardiac workload
antithyroid medications (PTU, propylthiouracil)
Monitor blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, oxygenation
Assess for peripheral
maintain patent airway
regular eye exams, moisturize eyes
Radioactive Iodine 131 - taken up by thyroid gland and destroys some thyroid cells over 6-8 weeks - monitor lab values for hypothyroidism
Monitor nutritional status through results of lab data. Serum , transferrin and total lymphocyte counts tend to be lower in nutritional deficits. A negative balance signifies a catabolic state where protein is lost and metabolic demands are not being met.

Surgical removal responsibilities:
monitor airway
assess for obstruction, stridor, dysphagia
have tracheotomy equipment available
maintain in semi- position
assess for bleeding
monitor for calcemia
have calcium gluconate available
minimal during immediate post operative period

Patient education:
Ask the person to daily at the same time each day and keep a record of results. Advise them of the importance of doing this to detect weight loss and the bodies inability to meet metabolic
In collaboration with a dietician, advise the person the need for a carb and protein diet including between meal snacks. small meals a day might be better than 3 large meals. Increased nutrients and a well-balanced diet are essential to meet metabolic needs
