Leif Erikson was born in Iceland in 970c.
Erikson is supposed to have founded a Viking settlement at Vinland. Vinland today is known as the Canadian island of Newfoundland.
Erikson has had 6 statues erected in his honor.
Leif Ericson was the son of a Norse chief Erik the Red, named for his red beard.
It wasn't until 1964 that congress gave approval for Leif Erikson Day to be celebrated as a national holiday.
